I love to cook. Not on a level like most of you though. What fascinated me the most is the chemistry behind cooking. How do I prepare meat that is well cooked and has no spot of red in it any longer, that has a crusty outer layer and that is not dried out on the inside? How do I spice things up in such a way that you have a different flavour when you put the food in your mouth, when you chew on it and after you have swallowed it? Nevertheless, I prefer simplicity over all else. Cooking shouldn’t be hard; it should be fun and easy and something you would like to do every day, all day.

And then we have weight watchers. How come someone loves food and is on a diet? The truth is that I am not really on a diet. I have a BMI of 23 so I am most definately in the save zone. I have never been overweight and never underweight. Yet I realize that the problem of obesity is the problem of this generation. After centuries of food deficiency, we have entered an era where food can be found aplenty. It can be obtained effortless and even the poorest rarely die because of food shortage. We are spoiled and we get punished for it. For ages, those that stored massive amounts of fat were the ones who survived. Nowadays this same trick is killing us.

I like to let myself be guided by weight watchers points because it does not leave out any food groups, nor does it restrict anything else. It does offer a rather easy way to keep track of the number of calories you consume each day. Just being aware of how nutritional certain food is may learn you to develop a better way of eating. Let me be very clear about this. I do not stop visiting Mc Donalds. I do not stop eating ice cream. I do not stop eating nuts, M&Ms, chocolate or anything else. In fact, in any normal week I will most likely do all of these things and still be on a “diet”. The only thing that is changed is the quantity.

Okay, but doesn’t quantity make food so good? I love the things I eat, so I eat plenty of it. This must be one lousy motivation for eating too much. Instead of gobbling down that bar of chocolate, why not nibble on it for a change? Let a small piece melt in your mouth and let yourself be baffled by the amazing palette of flavours that the single piece of chocolate boasts. Try different brands and you’ll soon discover that they all taste a bit different. Try the same with Parmesan cheese and you will be amazed once again. Even vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes come in all forms and flavours, each a bit different.

Obesity is the problem of the future and it will have effects that are as devastating as global warming and it will be equally daunting to overcome. As with all other things, it starts right here, with yourself. Try to be food-aware and start cooking yourself. It is not so hard and it is how humanity has been doing it since the beginning.

That is why I want to share my recipes with you and why I enrich them with nutritional information such as weight watchers points. That is why my recipes are both simple and delicious. That is why I do hope that you will enjoy them.

Quantum computing is a hype that has been alive for the last 20 or so years. Like any hyped technology, people are prone to exaggerate the benefits, ignore the downsides and they generally tend to project a future image that is all bright and shiny thanks to this new technology. This is no different for quantum computing and examples of this believe are found aplenty.

Some of these misconceptions are in fact quite small. For example, it is a wide-spread believe that a quantum bit can do so much more since it can hold two bits of data instead of one. While being incorrect, it is not entirely a lie. The confusion arises from the notation that is used to describe quantum bits:

I would have to agree that this definition seems daunting. However, when looking at it more closely, it is actually saying nothing more than that a quantum bit will, with some probability , be 0. If it is not 0, it is 1. But isn’t this true for an ordinary bit as well? The only difference is that an ordinary bit is 0 with either 0% or 100% chance since it can only take on either 0 or 1. Thus all one can say is that a quantum bit is an extension of a normal bit with some statistical probability associated to it (though granted, this statistical probability allows for some nifty things to be done).

So, what is quantum computing then all about? That is what this paper is written for. It introduces the field of quantum computing in a not overly extremely daunting way and it debunks a lot of the myths and rumors that one comes across when looking for information regarding quantum computing. Nevertheless, it does show you how wonderful the world of quantum computing is. Discover how the Mach-Zehnder interferometer works, even tough this is nothing like you would anticipate. And learn how to search even faster through an unordered collection of data.

To read the full paper and immerse yourself in the wonderfully strange world of quantum computing, please click here.
